LDJW NEWS ON BOX OFFICES:
For the second weekend in a row, Jodie Foster's thriller ‘Flightplan’ was top at the US box office. In its second weekend it took 15 million dollars, it has grossed more than 46 million dollars in just ten days. The big wide opening of the weekend was Joss Whedon's ‘Serenity’ which failed to score big then hoped with earnings of just over 10 million dollars. Dropping to third place from last week's second place, Tim Burton's animated film ‘Corpse Bride’ grossing 9.7 million dollars. It has earned just under 33 million dollars and will have to face DreamWorks' own stop motion offering ‘Wallace & Gromit - The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’ next weekend. Expanding into wide release, David Cronenberg's crime thriller ‘A History of Violence,’ with Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello, had the highest per-theatre average of all the movies in the Top 10 or in wide release, earning 8.2 million dollars in only 1,340 theatres. Based on the graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, the film made more this weekend than Cronenberg's last three films made in total in their U.S. theatrical release. It also did better than the underwater thriller ‘Into the Blue,’ starring Paul Walker and Jessica Alba, which opened in the most theatres of any new movie this weekend, but only averaged 2,500 dollars in each, a weak opening weekend of just 7 million dollars. Good news for ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ starring Steve Carell as the title character. It added another 3 million dollars to its impressive take this weekend, finally crossing the 100 million dollar mark.
